With its vast plains teeming with wildlife, East Africa is the best place in the world to watch wildlife. The number and variety of East Africa’s fauna- in particular its high concentrations of large mammals are unsurpassed, and are among the region’s major attraction.
While large mammals like the lion, buffalo, Elephant, leopard and rhino get most of the attention, there are many more. Zebras, wild beast, hippos, giraffes, antelopes, elands, kudus, are all commonly seen, and there are many predatory animals in addition to those already mentioned, including hyenas and wild dogs.
Large animals are more abundant, diverse and visible in East Africa than anywhere else in the world. East Africa is notable for its exceptional birdlife. Among the region’s close to 1,500 species are various types of kingfishers, hornbills, bee-eaters, ostriches, fish eagles, flamingos, as well as numerous rare and endemic birds including the elusive shoebill stork. Uganda alone- which many ornithologists consider to be one of the continent’s premier bird watching destinations hosts more than 1000 species.
In addition, the region is home to over 60,000 insect species, several dozens types of reptiles and amphibians, a wide variety of snakes and numerous fish species. In addition to the rich coastal marine life found in the Indian Ocean waters offshore from East Africa, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyansa are notable for having among the highest fish diversities of any lake in the world, with an exceptionally large number of colourful cichlid species.
Wildlife being one of the major attractions in East Africa continues to draw visitors to the three East Africa countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda
