Birding at Nyungwe Forest Reserve:

Nyungwe Forest is one of the leading attractions in Rwanda, easily the equal of Kibale in Uganda. One of the largest protected montane rainforests in Africa, it offers superb scenery. The main attraction is the guided tours to view birds, large groups of black and white Angolan colobus monkeys or chimpanzees. The lush, green valleys also offer outstanding hiking across 20km of well-maintained trails passing through enormous stands of hardwoods, under waterfalls and through a large marsh.
There are about 275 species of birds, 270 species of trees, 70 plus species of mammal and an astonishing variety of orchids and butterflies. There are well maintained trail networks for guided and unguided walks. Bird watching, chimpanzee walks can be taken on any of the colour-coded forest trails and camping Uwinka.
There is a waterfall trail with good birding and the chance to view a group of fairly easy-going Angolan colobus in a small section of forest near the local tea estate. Whatever the color of your walks, good footwear, binoculars and rain gear are advisable.
This beautiful and ancient tropical evergreen forest of Nyungwe is arguably the country's most exciting hotspot for birders. Nyungwe is the only safe site in the world where the spectacular Red-collared Babbler can be sought. 275 bird species have been recorded in Nyungwe which include Rockeffer’s Sunbird, Grauer’s Warbler, Kungwe Apalis, Albertine Owlet and Rwenzori Turaco.
The avian highlight of the Nyungwe is the great turaco-an outlandish blue, red and green bird which streams from tree to tree like a procession of streamlined psychedelic turkeys.
