Rwanda gorillas
Ruhengeri is a small, inspiring town with beautiful views and the mighty Virunga volcanoes looming over the town to the north and west- Karisimbi, Bisoke, Mikeno, Muside, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. Most travellers come to Ruhengeri on their way to magnificent Pac national des Volcans, the best in Africa to track rare Mountain gorillas.
Ruhengeri has unforgettable setting at the base of the Virungas. On the outskirts of the town, the natural bridge at Musanze - a solidified lava flow - is a fascinating relic of the volcanic activity that shaped this scenic area. Nearby are the lovely Lakes Burera, Ruhondo and Karago.
Getting to There and Away:
Ruhengeri can be accessed by road or by air.
By Road:
Ruhengeri is connected by a tarmac road to Kigali, Gisenyi and Cyanika (Rwanda/Uganda Border). Several bus companies offer schedule services between Ruhengeri and Kigali, including Okapi Car and Virunga Express. There are normal minibuses from Ruhengeri to Kigali on a breath taking mountain road, as well as to Cyanika on the Rwanda-Uganda border. The drive Kigali-Ruhengeri will take you approximately 2 Hours via a very scenic road.
Ruhengeri serves as the nerve centre of Rwanda's tourism. Ruhengeri is the access point to the Gorilla Park. Many of the tourist activities in Ruhengeri are focused on Volcanoes National Park.
The safari attractions in Ruhengeri include;
This is the definitive location to track the rare and captivating mountain gorillas in Africa.This area along the border with Congo, and Uganda also happens to be the most beautiful sights in Africa. On the bamboo and rainforest-covered slopes of the volcanoes are some of the last mountain gorilla’ which was studied in the depth first by George Schaller and, more recently, by Dian Fossey.
Climbing Karisimbi may take two days. The track follows the saddle between Bisoke and Karisimbi and then ascends the northern flank of the latter. The rocky and sometimes snow- covered summit is a further two to four hours walk through the alpine vegetation. To do this trek, take plenty of warm clothing and a very good sleeping bag.
Climbing Gahinga and Muhabura is a two day trip from Gasiza. The summit of the first volcano is reached after a climb along a track that passes through a swampy saddle between the two mountains.
Dian spent the best part of 13 years living at a remote camp high up the slopes of Bisoke in order to study the gorillas and to habituate them to human contact.
The track ascend the southeastern face of the volcano, ending up with a rough scramble over steep lava beds along a very narrow path.
