Rwanda Tours & Safaris - Gisenyi Tour
Gisenyi is a resort town forrich Rwandans and expatriate workers. Their beautifully landscaped villas, plush hotels and clubs take up virtually all the Lake Kivu. There are magnificent views over Lake Kivu and looking northwest, the 3470m high volcano of Nyiragongo, which blew its top and swallowed much of Goma in neighbouring Congo in early 2002. It is a pleasant town with swimming and sunbathing activities as part of leisure.
At Kibuye, to its south, tourist activities are centered on a modern lakeshore guesthouse overlooking pine-covered hills seemingly transplanted from the Alps. Gisenyi is connected by a wild roller-coaster road that tumbles through lush plantain fields and relic patches of misty rainforest to offer sweeping views over the blue water. It is one of the classic road journeys in all of Africa.
It is a beautiful journey from Ruhengeri through rural farms and villages and there are panoramic views of Lake Kivu as the road descends into Ginsenyi. There are regular buses and minibuses between Gensenyi and Ruhengeri. There is also a speed boat available for charter between Gisenyi and Kibuye.
The active volcano of Nyiragongo in the DR Congo which erupted recently burring half of Goma. Note that hiking Nyiragongo takes two days. A trickle of tourists head across the border to Goma to see the aftermath of the massive volcanic eruption that devastated the town in early 2002.
