NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK - INFORMATION
Stunning in both its concentration in wildlife and proximity to the bustling streets of the city, Nairobi National Park is a spectacular introduction to Kenya.
Nairobi National is 120 kms2 teeming with game and contains almost everything you might see bigger more remote parks, except elephants. In fact it is the best place in Kenya, if not the whole of Africa, to see Black rhinos in the wild.
The park has a diversity of environments with characteristic fauna and flora. Open grass plains with scattered acacia bush are predominant. The western side has a highland dry forest and a permanent river with a riverine forest in the south. In addition, there are stretches of broken bush country and deep, rocky valleys and gorges with scrub and long grass.
The Athi River at the park's far end forms a delightful natural boundary to the park and provides shady walks through a riverine forest well populated with monkeys and birds and in the river pools, hippo and crocodile. Large populations of giraffe, wildebeest, eland and Thomson's gazelle dominate the plains, with strutting secretary birds and powerful ostrich as attractive counter-points.
Wildlife:
The park has a large and diverse wildlife population. Species found in the park include African Buffalo, Baboon, Black rhinoceros, Burchell’s Zebra, Coke’s hartebeest, Hippos, Leopard, Lion, Eland, Impala, Masai giraffe, Ostrich e.t.c.
More recently the Park has been designated as a rhino sanctuary and more than 50 rhino have been moved into the park from remote parts of the country where poaching was rife. So Nairobi Park is really the most favoured place in the country to see rhino. Along the south western boundary of the park the scenery is magnificent.
Herbivores, including wildebeest and zebra, use the Kitengela conservation area and migration corridor to the south of the park to reach the Athi-Kapiti plains.
The concentration of wildlife in the park is greatest in the dry season, when areas outside the park have dried up. The park is the northern limit for wildlife migrations in the dry season. The park has a high diversity of bird species, with up to 500 permanent and migratory species in the park.
