ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK - INFORMATION
Aberdare is a highland Forest Park known for its montane vegetation, scenic views, game and waterfalls. Running south to north for 60 km through the central highlands area are the magnificent Aberdare Mountains.
The Aberdares retain an air of mystery and it would be easy to get lost amongst its thickly wooded hills and mountains, the highest of which reaches to a lofty 14,000 feet (4,267m).
The park has a variety in scenery, flora and animals not easily found elsewhere. The park is composed of two parts, the higher moorlands with the three peaks, and the lower Salient where the rainforest is thick and there’s more wildlife.
With walkways and accommodation raised into the forest canopy, you can watch animals from a unique vantage point. Positioned by waterholes and natural salt licks, animals provide constant entertainment and seem undisturbed by the stream of curious visitors, some of whom stay up all night to catch sightings of shy animals by floodlight.
Wildlife:
There’s plenty of wildlife present, but as the big rainforest is an excellent hiding space for them, it’s best to stay a few days. Animals present include buffaloes, elephants, leopards, lions, baboons and several sorts of monkeys. Higher up in the moorlands, elands and serval cats can also be spotted. Moreover, there are literally hundreds of bird species present, including regal crowned cranes, sparry hawks, eagles, giant kingfishers, sunbirds, and plovers.
